Lindsay Lohan’s Summer Capsule Wardrobe In Georgia Rule
This 2007 costume design is a beginner’s guide to boho-chic.
Building a capsule wardrobe is more complicated than it looks, so I’m always open to new sources of inspiration. Recently, I stumbled upon the perfect example of a Summer capsule wardrobe for 2025 in an unsuspecting place: a 2007 film.
Nearly twenty years after its release, Gary Jones’s costume design for Lindsay Lohan in Georgia Rule touches on today’s biggest spring/summer trends. It’s not the first time Jones has nailed the curation of a timeless summer wardrobe. In 1991, he was the costume director of The Talented Mr. Ripley, another iconic reference for summer and vacation dressing inspiration.
For Lohan’s character, Rachel Wilcox in Georgia Rule, Jones unintentionally curated a wardrobe that blends 2025’s circle back to basic fashion with its simultaneous boho-chic nostalgia. In the film, Lohan favors a classic foundation of white button-ups, nap dresses, and classic denim. Accompanying accessories like chunky jewelry, oversized eyewear, and slouchy bags reference boho-chic trends.
This collection of simple, cohesive pieces is comparable to a capsule wardrobe—perfect for easy mixing and matching, which creates seemingly endless looks with a consistent aesthetic. For these reasons, a complete and concise capsule wardrobe has remained a trending, coveted asset and mark of actualized personal style for the past few years.
The core basics you’d typically find in a summer capsule never truly go out of style. But recently, many have observed a distinct circle back to “basic” fashion. In 2024, Vogue Business predicted “norm-core” would be one of 2025’s biggest trends, and at the beginning of the year, Dazed asked, “Is basic fashion the trend set to define 2025?”
Our micro-trend fatigue may have led us back to the classic pieces Georgia Rule showcases: tank tops, denim, button-ups, and sundresses. As we struggle to keep up with relentless and speedy niche trend cycles, we feel drawn towards dressing that seems simple, effortless, and minimalistic, like Lohan’s aesthetic in the film.
These simple pieces feature boho-chic details when you look closely: eyelet fabrics, ruffles, and small bows. But it’s the accessories of the wardrobe that really drive the boho look home: oversized amber aviators, stacked beaded bracelets and gold charms, wooden wedges, beaded hobo bags. Costume design for Lohan could be a coastal girl's take (her character’s home state is California) on the boho-chic fashion of 2007. Over the past year, current trends have revealed themselves to be highly nostalgic for this era.
In 2024, for fall/winter 2025, Isabel Marant and Ralph Lauren showed tasseled scarves and fringed jackets on the runway. Earlier that same year, Chemana Kemali’s debut Chloé collection for spring/summer 2025 commanded Paris fashion week with dreamy ruffles, sheer dresses, and chunky accessories. Following this, the layered, studded, slightly maximalist looks of Serena van der Woodsen looks from (the original) Gossip Girl and paparazzi photos of the Olsen twins in the early 2000s began a return to Pinterest boards and Instagram Saved folders (at least, they returned to mine).
The return of boho-chic could be a reaction to the pervasive quiet luxury trends of the past couple of years. With billowy, flowing silhouettes and grunge-leaning details like brass buckles, boho-chic is comparatively fun, free, and rebellious. It’s a breath of fresh air (or a nostalgic scent, depending on how old you are) after quiet luxury’s strict rules of subtlety.
While basic and boho-chic trends may seem contrasting, Georgia Rule costume design presents them as complementary. In Lohan’s wardrobe, simple pieces are mixed, matched, and balanced with maximalist, boho-chic styling details. Herein lies the powerful timelessness of a capsule wardrobe. When the time comes, the same core pieces from Lohan’s wardrobe could be accessorized with details inspired by next year’s summer trends just as easily.
For those who might find the idea of translating runway boho-chic for everyday style intimidating, Lohan’s foundation of classic denim and white is friendly and accessible. Its freeing, nostalgic accessories showcase an easy way of incorporating trending boho-chic details into a basic wardrobe. Lohan’s summer wardrobe in Georgia Rule is an everyday take on a current high-fashion moment: a beginner’s guide to boho-chic, Chloé SS 2025 for clean girls.
